Meteor

The works using abstract and geometric shapes belong to a special segment in the life work of Amerigo Tot. The Stone of  Rebuilding (1950-51) can be considered as the forerunner of the Meteor (1954), which is also a block built of numerous lateral sides. While the sides of the  former one is composed of figural ornamented reliefs, on the surface of the Meteor, there are abstract, geometric forms, mostly getting deeper and deeper towards the centre of the statue. This surface treatment is used by Tot later in the relief titled Cylinders, Reflectors, Tunnels (1959), too.

The Meteor is made of concrete, - a material reinvented by the contemporary architecture, which became quite popular. Matter appears in its harshness. Tot used “positive” formworks for the preparations, these made it possible to cast the “negative” forms of the concrete statue.

The 225 cm high statue was ready by 1954, but it got erected only in 1960, next to the Palazzetto dello Sport designed by Pier Luigi Nervi. This stadium was built between 1956 and 1960 for the summer Olympic Games of Rome in 1960.  The atmosphere of form is similar to the blue glazed terracotta relief, the Geometric Muscles, which is also in Rome.  In 1969 there was a smaller size (38cm  high) of the meteor made in bronze, it is titled as Geometric meteor in the catalogues. This statue is missing. According to the photos made of this work, it is not a smaller copy of the concrete statue in Rome, but there are similar hollows on its side.

Due to the environmental impacts corrosion has started on the surface of the Meteor standing beside the Palazzetto dello Sport, plenty of damages and cracks can be spotted on it. The statue has weakened statically as well, so restoration is necessary in the near future.
